Academic Review & Desk Copy Policy
I frequently receive requests from academic instructors for desk copies of my work for review or because they have already decided to use my texts in their classes. I understand that schools have limited budgets and I also understand an instructor's desire to review materials before recommending or requiring them for classes. However, I am a very small publisher and if I gave everyone who wants them print copies of all my books I could not sustain myself financially.
Here are some solutions I have come up with:
EBOOK OPTION: This is the best option. I can supply you free-of-charge with an ebook copy of a text for your review. You would be welcome to keep this copy should you decide to use the book in your classes. Otherwise, I would request that you delete the book from your device after the end of a two week review period.
DAMAGED PRINT-BOOK OPTION: I often have some slightly damaged copies of texts that I would be willing to sell you at a deep discount of $20.00 + actual cost of shipping. You would then have a print desk copy of this title for your use. I occasionally have other titles that are slightly damaged as well.
NEW PRINT BOOK OPTION: The industry standard appears to be that print desk copies are no longer offered free of charge by most publishers the way they once were. One option is to send you a print book for your review (you pay actual shipping charges up front) with an invoice and a two week window for you to look it over. After that time you could either return the book in new and salable condition or pay full price for the book. This is my least favorite option because it is very difficult to use a book and keep it in absolutely new condition if you want to return it.
ANATOMY SOFTWARE REVIEW: The anatomy program must be downloaded and installed in order for it to be viewed. Write me an email to let me I know you want to review it for academic purposes. Then, I am willing to license a copy in your name at a special discounted review- copy-personal-use licensing rate of $35.00 USD (I don't think you'll find it a waste of money). All personal-use licensing permissions and limitations will apply. Then, if you decide you want to use it in classes, you can either have the school buy its own copy or upgrade your license to the appropriate level by having your school pay the additional fee for the type of institution where you teach (and reimburse your $35.00), thereby transferring the license to the school.
OBTAINING YOUR PHYSICAL REVIEW MATERIAL: Because of these special discounted prices, I will need to invoice you via email for payment or you can send me a check if you prefer (a check from your school will work too).
If you can think of some other creative solution, by all means let me know in the comments section of the form.
If you are affiliated with a teaching institution and wish to take advantage of one of these options, please email me your particulars at [email protected].
