    Publications:

    The Cochrane Database is a compilation of research based on randomized controlled trials. It covers all aspects of medical and maternity care. It's expensive but definitely worthwhile for schools and libraries.     The Compleat Mother is a quarterly Canadian publication which addresses various aspects of parenting and early child care with a radical slant. Visit their site a www.CompleatMother.com and e-mail them at Jody@monot.com.

    MIDIRS Midwifery Digest is a quarterly journal which takes its material from a wide range of sources: MIDIRS scans over 560 journals in the search for new information. The articles which are most interesting and relevant to midwives are selected for inclusion. They also take original articles on topical issues. Visit them at: www.midirs.org.

    Midwifery Today is an international quarterly journal featuring articles on all aspects of midwifery care. It is the delightful alternative to the mainstream medical journals and well worth having in your library. Their web site has all the back issues of their journal.     Mothering Magazine is a quarterly publication with articles of all aspects of mothering, parenting and family life with a radical slant. www.mothering.com.

    Primal Health Research is the quarterly newsletter put out by Michele Odent, MD focusing on corrilations between the long-term impact of birth-related experiences on adults. They can be visited at www.primal-health.org.


    Organizations:

    ALACE is a national organization which trains and certifies birth assistants. They can be reached at www.ALACE.org.

    The American College of Nurse-Midwives is the professional organization for nurse-midwives in the United States. The ACNM oversees training and certification of CNMs, has the only reviewed journal for midwifery in North America and offers memberships to CNMs and interested others. They can be found at www.acnm.org.

    ASPO Lamaze was the first childbirth education organization in the United States. They are still active and can be reached at www.lamaze-childbirth.com.

    DONA (Doulas of North America) is a national US organization which trains and certifies doulas. Doulas provide emotional support and physical assistance during pregnancy, labor and postpartum. Visit them at www.dona.com and e-mail them at askdona@aol.com.

    The English National Board of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting can be found at www.enb.org.uk.

    The GoodNews Network is one of the largest web sites for community-based midwifery with more than 500 files. It hosts a variety of topics including “Birth in the Fax Lane" (for parents-to-be), the American College of Domiciliary Midwives and state chapter, California College of Midwives, the fledgling International Journal of Domiciliary Midwifery (some day to be an on-line peer review journal), a section on the legal aspects called Midiwfery is NOT the Practice of Medicine and the Mennonite Order of Maternal Services (for religious practitioners). Other features on the web site are synoptic reports on journal articles, abstracts and citation lists supporting home-based birth services. It also functions as a mechanism of communication within the midwifery world, something like a monthly newspaper for midwives (see “:News du Jour” near the top of the home page).     ICEA (International Childbirth Educators Association) has a book catalogue and a newsletter. They can be found at www.icea.org.

    The International Confederation of Midwives is an organization made up of member organizations of midwives from around the world. They hold a conference every 3 years. They can be found at www.rcol.co.uk/comorg/icm.htm.

    La Leche League is the international breastfeeding resource organization providing books, a newsletter and other materials and assistance for mothers and professionals involved in assisting mothers with lactation. Visit them at www.lalecheleague.org.

    The Midwifery Education and Accreditation Council oversees the accreditation of programs to ensure that they can prepare students to become Certified Professional Midwives. CPMs may enter practice via a variety of educational routes, including apprenticeship. They can be reached at www.mana.org/meac/.

    The Midwives' Alliance of North America is the all encompassing professional midwifery organization that welcomes all midwives. MANA offers memberships and a national network of midwifery services. They can be reached at www.mana.org.

    The National Association of Childbearing Centers can be found at www.birthcenters.org.

    National Vaccine Information Center is an organization which offers education information for parents to make informed choices regarding immunizations. They also offer a variety of educational materials for practitioners. They can be found at www.909shot.com.

    NoCirc is an organization dedicated to educating parents and professionals about the harm done by routine circumcision. They are at www.nocirc.org.

    The North American Registry of Midwives provides a full certification credential which validates the educational and clinical background of applicants from a variety of educational pathways. They can be reached at www.mana.org/narm/.

    The United Kingdom Civil Council for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting can be found at www.ukcc.org.uk.

    Mothers at Home is a national, non-profit organization offering support and information through its books and 32 page advertisement-free awarding winning journal find them at www.mah.org.

    Momazons is a national organization and referral network by and for lesbians choosing children. Wonderful, affirming 16-page moma'zine (published 6 times yearly) celebrating lesbians' experiences and opinions about considering children, creating a family, blending families and other diverse issues of significance to lesbian mothers, their friends and families. $15-25 sliding scale membership or $3.00 for sample and information.     The International Cesarean Awareness Network was founded with the threefold purpose of lowering the rising cesarean rate through education, to provide a forum where women and mean can express their thoughts and concerns about birth, and to provide a support network for women who are healing from past birth experiences and for those who are preparing for birth.     Birthworks was inspired by the International Cesarean Awareness Network and is based method of childbirth preparation based on a wholistic model of birth. Visit their site at http://members.aol.com/birthwkscd/bw.html or e-mail them at BirthWksCD@aol.com.

    Global Maternal Child Heath Association and Waterbirth International Resource and Referral Center is the most complete waterbirth resource on the internet. They also offer equipment and other products of interest to midwives attending waterbirths. Free packets of information can be sent on request, free practitioner referrals throughout the United States. They can be reached at www.waterbirth.org.

    The Radical Midwives Association is a British organization founded over 20 years ago by midwives who got fed up with the way birth was being handled in the UK. They can be reached at www.radmid.demon.co.uk/index.htm and e-mail can be sent to arm@radmid.demon.co.uk. They publishes great quarterly journal entitled Midwifery Matters.

    Reproductive Health Online (Reproline) is a website tailored to the daily needs of ReproNet members, who comprise JHPIEGO's international network of family planning and reproductive health trainers and faculty. They provide tools and training forums for family planning service providers. In addition they provide ways for visitors to keep abreast of changes in training philosophies and technologies such as contraceptive technology updates, ready-to-use training materials and tips and well as other services.     The World Health Organization has a web site which lists numerous topics of interest to midwives. Visit them at www.who.org.     Web sites for projects and individuals of interest to birth professionals:

    Suzanne Arms, author of the groundbreaking book Immaculate Deception which rocked the status quo of birth practices in the 1980s is at it again, producing a series of powerful videos with which she intends to change the current trend of complacency regarding childbirth in North America.     Visit Elizabeth Davis' website at http://www.elizabethdavis.com for info on the new edition of Heart & Hands, other publications on women's Blood Mysteries, and the National Midwifery Institute, Inc.

    Robbie Davis-Floyd is an internationally recognized anthologist studying birth in the western world and the development of recent historical trends among midwives in North America. Her website can be contacted at www.Davis-Floyd.com.

    Faith Gibson is a community midwife in California and the "webwife" for the Good News Network. See details of the site under organizations.

    Check out www.idmd.org to find listings of midwives and doulas anywhere in the US and Canada. Kymberlie, the webwife, is working on funding because she really wants this site to be advertised in major publications, not just through word of mouth with the goal of improving the use of these services worldwide. She thinks part of that starts with letting people know HOW to find these services and educating them on the benefits. Contact the site to get yourself listed as well.

    Sheila Kitzinger is an internationally renown childbirth educator and author who can be found on the web at www.sheilakitzinger.com.

    Midwifery 2000 is the name of Marilyn Greene's web site. Marilyn is an independent midwife who has set up a richly content oriented site to provide information on a variety of topics. It includes a bibliography, and numerous other resources. She can be linked to by clicking on www.midwifery2000.com.
