MIDWIFERY RESOURCES: SUGGESTED BOOKS
Naturopaths Dicken Weatherby and Scott Ferguson have put together a number
of fabulous teaching aides and textbooks to help you better understand the
implications of the results of diagnostic tests and history-findings.
Three of these books are the best, most accessible texts I have seen on the
general interpretation and implications of laboratory findings. As soon as
I learned of them I notified my friend, Holly Scholles, Dean of Birthingway
College of Midwifery, and she immediately began to use them as required
texts for her first-year students. These books are:
"Blood Chemistry and CBC Analysis: Clinical Laboratory Testing from a
Functional Perspective"
This is simply the best book to use as a first reference for the general
understanding of diagnostic a number of basic test results prior to
conception or in early pregnancy. Gives you the foundation you need to
understand and make the best use of my text,"Understanding Diagnostic Tests
in the Childbearing Year." If you were to buy only one other book on lab
tests, I think this should be it.
"In-Office Lab Testing: Functional Terrain Analysis"
Gives you many details of simple tests that can be performed outside of or
during a prenatal visit to gather more health information about your
clients.
"Complete Practitioner's Guide to Take-Home Testing: Tools for Gathering
More Valuable Patient Data"
This text helps you explain to your client how to go about accurately
gathering information using simple tests the client can perform between
prenatal visits. While all of these will not be accurate during a
progressing pregnancy, many could be used preconception or during early
pregnancy.
In addition, they have a book to help you do a more in-depth history and
physical:
"Signs and Symptoms Analysis from a Functional Perspective: A Question by
Question Guide"
This text goes way beyond basic history-taking methods to elicit rich
details from your clients about their health condition. It also gives
follow-up assessments and suggestions for balancing the system. You will
learn a lot more about what you are asking for and why from this book. An
excellent complement to the pregnancy-specific information you will find in
"Holistic Midwifery, Vol. I."
These books can be purchased on-line either in hard copy or electronically
and printed out at home. If your home printer cannot give you double-sided
copies, take the PDF file to the copy shop and have them print it out for
you double-sided. Then have them cover and bind it. No postage necessary!
